In the animal’s world, having many mates can ensure the survival of the species, but there are some exceptions. In the lecture, the professor talks about 2 vivid examples to introduce 2 reasons why some animals just have one mate.
Hard to find a mate is definitely one reason. For example, seahorse, an undersea creature lives sparsely. Such living habit imposes seahorses a disadvantage to find a mate. And that compounds the physical limitation of seahorses themselves, that they are not good swimmers, which again sets a great limitation for them to find a mate.
The low reproduction rate can also be a reason. For example a kind of birds called albatross just lay one egg a year. In order to ensure the survival of the bridling, one of the parent bird needs to take care of it while the other should search for food.
