　　Technology has made its presence felt by almost everyone, from adults to young kids. Many parents allow their kids to use computers, smartphones or play video games at quite a young age. Some people begin to wonder if children rely too much on technology. However, as far as I am concerned, such reliance can be justified.

　　For those kids, they now have very different forms of entertainment compared to 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. Instead of playing outside or playing simpler toys with their peers, they can have some leisure time without leaving the house. Home-based entertainment can satisfy most of their needs. For example, they can use their computers to play some well-designed online games. At the same time, they can also communicate and work together with their friends while playing. Click the “video chat” button and they will be connected in no time and start working together, figuring out strategies to beat their opponents. Parents or children themselves can also download or stream movies online and create their exclusive home-based theatre. How convenient and amazing that sounds? All these recreational activities are just as relaxing as outside activities and children can develop their communicative skills and obtain some intellectual stimulations as well.

　　In regard to smartphones, most people believe that children should not be allowed to use them. For children, they should spend more time outside so they can develop a better sense and perception toward the real world. However, I personally feel if there are enough parental controls, children who reach certain age (maybe around 10) can benefit greatly from using cellphones. So many great applications are just out there for children to enjoy. If children have interest in music or creating, they can use Imovie to create their own music video; if they like photography, starting from the basics by using their cellphones doesn’t sound like a bad idea; if they enjoy drawing, I believe there are more than enough tools on their phones that they can utilize. Technology will always be developing. While it might exert some negative influence, its advancement has made it possible for children to turn their imagination and ideas into reality in a more efficient way.

　　Admittedly, some of the concerns raised by children’s use of technological products are totally understandable. Parents are worried that these products might alter the parent-child relationship. On the other hand, if children play simpler toys or play outside, parents will be given more opportunities to bond with their kids. However, as I have mentioned before, parents should be more confident about their authority and offer reasonable parental controls. In the hands of children whose judgment is fast developing, smartphones can lead to smarter choices and positive impact.
