考题回忆:If a book is adapted into a movie, some people prefer to read the book before watching the movie while others prefer to watch the movie before reading the book. Which do you prefer and why?

  解题思路:

Watch the movie before reading the book.

  1. Movies provide better sensory experiences than books.

  2. Movies contain more exciting plots than books.

  3. Movies help us to understand the books.

  参考范文:

Many successful novels and comic books have been adapted into movies, which bring to life many famous characters and provide new insight to the original version. While some people may choose to read the novels before watching the movie for fear of omissions and distortions, I would like to watch the adapted movie before turning to the original books.

First, movies provide better sensory experiences than books. Printed books, be it novels or comic books, offer only limited stimulus to the readers, as novels only contain verbal information while comic books are no better even if they are full of images. Movies, on the other hand, is a combination of visual and audio effects, which grab our attention much more easily than books. With the help of the 3D effect, we are even able to watch the vivid display of many scenes, which may take the writer several pages to portray. Anyone who has watched the Harry Potter series would concede that the magic world, though depicted with great precision by J. K. Rowling, still pales in comparison with the final representation on the screen. The magnificent castle of Hogwarts, the scary magical creatures, and the fascinating magical gadgets can immediately transport us into the magic world, the details of which are scattered in the books and too difficult to envision all by ourselves. In fact, only after an excellent sensory experience with the movie would many people consider reading the original novel.

Second, movies contain more exciting plots than books. Although some may argue that the plots in the original novels tend to be cut or rewritten to fit the length of the movie, we should also remember that the most exciting plots are always retained. Also, since the whole plot is crammed into a two-hour movie, the concentrated version means one classic scenario after another--a real feast to the audience. For example, Gone with the Wind is such a long novel that it usually takes several weeks to finish reading it. The important plot and plot twists are dispersed in the whole book, embedded in long conversations and depiction of the ambiance. More often than not, the reader can at most encounter one important scenario per day, so the novel might seem boring and tedious to some readers. However, the three-hour movie contains almost everything in the novel. Hence, the condensed plots are much more engaging than those in the original novel. After watching the abbreviated yet condensed version, it is also an enjoyable task to find out the adaptions and omissions of the plot when reading the original version.

Finally, movies help us to understand the books. Many renowned novels or comic books tell stories that happen in another time, another country, or even another universe. In this way, it is somewhat difficult for the readers to follow the thoughts of the author and really understand the novel. However, the playwrights and the directors have clearly gained a thorough understanding of the original version, so their re-created version would be much more understandable to the ordinary audience. Harry Potter again serves as a telling example. As we all know, most of its story takes place in the fictitious magic world, which is rather unfamiliar to the readers, especially those from eastern countries, whose culture are strikingly different from their western counterparts. The readers can hardly envision the magic world to every detail or guess the purpose of the spells from the literal meaning of the Latin words. However, if they can watch the movie first, when they open the books, they can at least have a basic understanding of the story, and the omitted scenes and plots would also be more comprehensible.

In conclusion, I would like to watch the movie before reading the book since it offers better sensory experiences and more exciting plots, as well as facilitating the understanding of the book.
