　　As far as I know, students nowadays are less interested in politics than decades ago. This can be seen from actions taken by students in junctures of history in recent decades and what their counterparts did before.

　　In China for example, when World War One ended in 1919, and the sovereignty over parts of its territory was to be decided by other powers rather than itself, students in Beijing took to the streets to protest. This became the famous “May 4th Movement” that ushered in the modern era in China and left an influence that could still be felt nearly a century later. The patriotism and sense of responsibility for their country shown by these students helped shape an ancient nation’s spirit and, together with other student movements inspired by it that followed through in the Anti-Japanese War period, finally contributed to the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

　　These days, however, there is a noticeable decline in students’ interest in Chinese politics. With the economy surpassing that of Japan and Germany and becoming the second biggest in the world after only the US, Chinese people are more interested in making money than participating in politics. The trend is more keenly felt among students, where in high schools they do not have time to mind politics and in universities, while having the time, they generally lack enthusiasm for it. They are either busy studying or playing with their phones. When asked about their future career expectations, more say they want to become entrepreneurs rather than go into politics.

　　Worldwide, political participation among students is also low. Fractions in societies tend to make their own voices heard instead of relying on students to pioneer for them. Black Life Matters movement and Occupy Wall Street movement both were initiated by respective groups of society. The election of Donald Trump as president is largely due to the frustration of blue-collar workers in America who saw their jobs taken away by globalization. In all of them, the participation by students was less felt.
